Makow is not yet a man, but he is caught up in the angry crowd and the words of war against the English spoken by the great Pontiac. But Makow’s mother has an unusual friendship with the English and teaches that peace is better than war. She instructs Makow’s grandfather to leave their lodge near Fort Detroit ad take her son for his vision quest in their ancestral home, weeks of travel by canoe. As Makow and his grandfather rush to escape the impending conflict, Makow is stunned by a new revelation—that he has a twin brother who was separated from the family as an infant.

In the journey that follows, Makow finds more about his past and learns the meaning of his name and its connection to his lost brother. In his confusion and rage, he interrupts his vision quest and follows a group of young warriors who are headed to another battle with the English at Fort Michilimackinac.
